English version

Tomorrow marks the 120 years of Agatha Christie, the undisputed Queen of Crime. The three following posts are my humble tribute to the author.

"Murder on the links” (“Murder in the golf course" in the Spanish version) is the third novel by the author, written in 1923. We return here to our friend Poirot and his inseparable Hastings.

Poirot receives a letter from France with a plea for help: Mr. Renauld fears his life is in danger and asks Poirot to visit him to investigate the events. Poirot and Hastings go immediately to Merlinville-sur-Mer, in the northern French coast, but it's too late. Renauld has been murdered the previous night and his body found by some men who were working on a nearby golf course. Poirot will take the resolution of the case as a personal obligation, having failed to prevent it, and even more so when in the course of the investigation he meets an arrogant French investigator, M. Giraud.

Everything will be complicated further when a second murder is committed. Reappears then an old story of another crime committed years ago that has many links with the current one. Agatha Christie involves in the story a complicated number of characters, among which stand out three girls (the daughter of a person connected with the murder, and two twin actresses and acrobats), which will have a leading role in solving the crimes. The plot is complex but will have its happy ending: Poirot gets to solve all the mysteries, proving the Belgian detective methods (“gray cells”) are superior to those of his French colleague. As usual, the motive is money. And finally, Hastings finds his true love, although it is unclear if it will last. We will have to continue on reading.

Better built than the previous one, the novel is typical of Agatha Christie, but perhaps is somewhat excessive. The plot is too complicated and loses credibility at times. But still it is entertaining. The best, the rivalry with the French detective. Although Poirot is Belgian in the background the author presents him along as the perfect English gentleman, on the other hand, Giraud is portrayed as the prototype of cocky and arrogant French. You can feel that the author enjoyed herself here, and surely also sought the complicity of her public.

It is curious the double meaning that the title takes now, in the context of Internet, "The Murder on the Links". Care should be taken with what we click on.
